Two Hundred Eighty-One

The signal said forty-three. Longyearbyen holds two hundred eighty-one people who could not get a seat out, and Solveig chose the number that would bring the ship. Mara walks a town running on one generator, a fermenter plant weeks from its first spoonful, and a mountain where Runa guards the world’s last copies of its seed.

One table, two commands and 454 lives behind a closed door. Every faction must name who its plan leaves behind, until Rachel hands Mara a switch and the whole valley hears the argument. The town agrees on one reversible trial: run the ship’s cable ashore and bring the lights back.
