THE METHOD
Same race. Comparable dollars.
For each labeled year, we transcribed the cumulative worldwide gross displayed for every visible film. We then multiplied each amount by the ratio of the December 2025 CPI-U index to the December index for that year:
adjusted gross = displayed gross × 324.054December CPI-U for that year
The base value, 324.054, is the unadjusted all-items CPI-U for December 2025. The Bureau of Labor Statistics describes this index-ratio method for translating nominal dollars into constant dollars.
THE FINAL FRAME
2025, in Jan. 1, 2026 dollars
Because the base is December 2025 CPI-U, the last frame’s amounts are unchanged apart from rounding. The point of the conversion appears earlier: a dollar in 1972 carries far more purchasing power than a dollar in 2025.
